Atherton opened Sosharu in collaboration with executive head chef Alex Craciun in 2016, serving Japanese cuisine with British ingredients.
But a spokeswoman told BigHospitality the chef is now looking to move the restaurant to Mayfair or Soho, in central London.
While the concept and the food were a great success, she says Clerkenwell was the 'wrong' location for Sosharu.
“He [Atherton] thinks there’s a better location,” she says.
Atherton, who spent nearly a decade at Gordon Ramsay Group, has not yet identified a potential location and there is no specific time-frame for the move, the spokeswoman says.
The chef’s Social Company restaurant group operates 17 sites in the UK and around the world, including Hai Cenato, its first Italian eatery, at the Nova development in London’s Victoria.
He is also planning to open Sosharu in partnership with Craciun at the upcoming Edition hotel in Shanghai next Easter.
Speaking at the Restaurant Congress in June Atherton revealed that he had put plans for 'two or three' further restaurant concepts on hold due to uncertainty over Brexit.
