Feeding time: River Cottage opens restaurant at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

River Cottage restaurant Whipsnade Zoo
River Cottage, the restaurant group founded by chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, has opened a new site at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire.

Visitors can enjoy a new ‘feeding time’ at the Kitchen and Deli, which overlooks the Zoo’s herd of white rhinos.

Dishes focus on River Cottage’s ‘hands-on ethical food focus’, ranging from roast spiced cauliflower, split peas and crisp onions; to hazelnut pavlova with roasted apples and custard.

“[It’s] been a real pleasure to develop our River Cottage menu for the Zoo’s visitors,” says Fearnley-Whittingstall.

“Among other delights, we are serving up venison ragu with Quicke’s Mature Cheddar macaroni. We’re also going big on seasonal veg, with side-dishes like beetroot caponata; roast carrot, orange and dill salad; and wood-fired roast potato chips with rosemary salt.”

Levy UK, the Zoo’s official catering partner, has worked in partnership with River Cottage to create the restaurant.

The site is the latest addition to the River Cottage portfolio, which includes three restaurants in Axminster, Bristol and Winchester, as well as a cookery and chef’s school at its base on the Devon-Dorset border.

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is home to more than 3,000 animals across 600 acres of land.
