Deliveroo opens up its platform to restaurants with own delivery
Deliveroo has announced a major expansion drive that will see it open up its platform to restaurants with their own delivery services for the first time.

The company predicts the Marketplace+ programme will encourage 5,000 new operators to sign up to its site from July – an increase of 50%.

It will also see Deliveroo expand its reach to 50 new towns and cities in the UK, many of which will offer the new service.

It means restaurants with their own drivers will be able to use Deliveroo’s fleet of riders to cope at peak times.

A Deliveroo spokesperson told BigHospitality the commission rate on orders will “reflect whether a restaurant is making use of our 15,000 strong delivery network”.

The company has historically been selective about the restaurants on its platform, and deliberately avoids listing what it perceives as “low-quality takeaway restaurants”.

But Deliveroo says it will target the most popular restaurants in local areas under Marketplace+.

“We want people to eat more amazing, but in the knowledge that everyone’s version of amazing is different,” says a spokesperson.

“We will select the restaurants that people want and love based on our knowledge of the restaurants customers rate highly and frequently choose to order from.”

Marketplace+ is the latest sign of Deliveroo seeking to broaden its scope and see off competition from its rivals such as UberEats. JustEat - which merged with Hungryhouse this year - only listed restaurants with their own delivery riders until recently.

Marketplace+ is also being rolled out globally, launching in Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Australia and Hong Kong in July.

“This is a major development for the company that will mean thousands of new restaurants delivering new orders to new customers and it’s part of our mission to become the definitive food company,” says Deliveroo CEO Will Shu.
