Michelin has awarded 27 new Bib Gourmands in its 2019 Michelin Guide for UK & Ireland, bringing the total awarded by the red book to 143.

Four London restaurants were given bibs - Petit Pois in Hoxton, Kudu in Peckham, Seb Holme’s Farang in Highbury, and Sorella in Clapham - meaning that the capital is now home to 42 restaurants with the accolade.

However, 13 previous Bib winners have lost the accolade in the guide, including the Drapers Arms in Islington and Charlotte’s W5. Fitzrovia restaurant Clipstone also lost its Bib, but is expected to gain a Michelin star in its place when the guide announces its starred restaurants on Monday (1 October).

Other new recipients of a Bib Gourmand include Newcastle’s Route, which gains a third Bib for the city, and Cin Cin in Brighton. Bristol is home to three new Bib Gourmands, two going to restaurants in converted shipping containers - Josh Eggleton’s Root and Tare, which Michelin praised for its ‘creative cooking’. Bell’s Diner & Bar Rooms also received a Bib.

Scotland scored two Bib Gourmands in this year’s guide with Monadh Kitchen in Glasgow and Sugar Boat in Helensburgh, while beachside bistro Bryn Williams at PorthEirias won a third Bib for Wales.

The Republic of Ireland is now home to four new Bib Gourmands, bringing its total number up to 24. New entries were Clanbrassil House in Dublin, Tartare in Galway, Dillon’s in Timoleague and Brownes in Tuam. Former Michelin-starred chef Danni Barry won a Bib Gourmand for Northern Ireland at his Clenaghans restaurant.

Six pubs also received a Bib Gourmand this year, including Dog and Gun in Skelton, Cumbria; Compasses Inn in Crundale, Kent, and Crown Inn in Upton, Hampshire,

“Prices and value for money are important, but the Bib Gourmand is about much more; it’s about the ethos and philosophy of a restaurant,” says Rebecca Burr, Michelin’s Great Britain and IrelandDirector.

Michelin will launch the 2019 guide on 1 October at Waterloo’s BFI IMAX cinema.
