Chef Matt Gillan has ended his crowdfunding campaign to relaunch a West Sussex pub, after exceeding his target by almost £30,000.

Gillan has was hoping to raise £60,000 towards the project on Kickstarter, but has crowdfunded £89,007 from 640 backers.

He hit his initial target less than a week after the page’s launch.

The chef wrote on Twitter yesterday (10 March): “And that’s it!! We are done!! I can’t thank everyone that has supported this project enough. Whether pledging, RTing, info on the site, advice on the kickstarter or just getting in touch. You’ve all made this happen!! You guys smashed it!!!”

Gillan will use the funding to reopen the former Chequers pub in Slaugham, West Sussex, and turn it in to destination restaurant Heritage.

The chef previously won a Michelin star while cooking at nearby The Pass at South Lodge near Horsham.

He also currently oversees the food at the Foresters Arms, also close to Horsham, under his casual dining concept Electro Pirate.
