Fast casual sausage specialist Herman Ze German has chosen Birmingham’s Grand Central shopping centre for its first location outside the capital.

Slated to launch early next month, the restaurant will have 42 covers and - like its older London siblings - serve a menu that majors on the Berlin street food classic currywurst (steamed then fried pork sausage seasoned with curry ketchup and topped with curry powder).

There are other types of German sausages available, served either in a bun or alongside fries and Herman Ze German also serves schnitzel. Customers can customise their orders with toppings including pickles, remoulade, and sauerkraut.

Alongside the food, it will also offer German beers, including Fruh, Kolsch, Erdinger and Schneiderweisse.

In line with the brand’s London locations, the new restaurant’s interior was designed by freelance Berlin-based designer, Lena Kramer. Local contractor Charles Evans, who has worked on Indian formats Mowgli, has been commissioned to complete the fit out.

Launched in 2008, the brand currently has four sites in London and a food truck in Germany.

“Herman Ze German will be a great addition to Grand Central’s already strong restaurant line-up,” says Iain Mitchell, UK commercial director at retail owner-manager Hammerson. “The fact that the brand has chosen Grand Central and Birmingham for its first site outside of London is a real vote of confidence in the city, and highlights the centre’s position as one of the UK’s premier retail and leisure destinations.”

“We are super excited to be bringing our famous Currywurst, Schnitzels and grilled Black Forest sausages to Birmingham," says co-founder Azadeh Falakshahi. "With its line-up of leading retailers and restauranteurs and location directly above the busy New Street Station, Grand Central was the obvious choice for our first site outside of London.”
