Nobu Hospitality is returning to the West End for the opening of its second London hotel in spring 2020.

The group, founded by chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert De Niro and film producer Meir Teper, will launch a site in Marylebone’s Portman Square in partnership with London + Regional Hotels.

The 239-room hotel will feature a Nobu restaurant, as well as a ballroom and meeting rooms.

It marks a return to the area for Nobu, which opened two eponymous Japanese-Peruvian restaurants in nearby Mayfair in 1997 and 2005 before heading east to Shoreditch for its first London hotel in 2017.

Both Mayfair restaurants lost their Michelin stars in the 2015 edition of the guide, despite the Park Lane site holding the award for 17 years, and have yet to regain them.

Speaking to BigHospitality last year, Matsuhisa said opening in east London had been a ‘challenge’ compared to Mayfair, where his restaurants welcomed two generations of ‘steady and high class’ customers.

He added that the decision to move in to hotels came form his business partner, De Niro.

“A lot of Nobu restaurants are in hotels, so one day he said ‘hey Nobu, why are we opening in someone else’s hotel? Let’s do our own’.”

Nobu’s first eponymous restaurant opened in New York in 1994 and the group now has more than 40 sites worldwide, with hotels in development in Barcelona, Riyadh, Chicago, Toronto, Sao Paulo, Atlanta, Tel Aviv and Warsaw.
