Great British Menu finalist Dan Fletcher has been named head chef at 28 Market Place, the new restaurant from ex-Soho House director Ben Crofton.

Fletcher, who was formerly the head chef at Fenchurch at Sky Garden in London, will assume his new role in July ahead of the restaurant’s opening in Somerton, Somerset this autumn.

Prior to the launch, Fletcher will be tasked with putting together the restaurant’s ‘modern British-European menu’ with a focus on local produce.

28 Market Place is the first solo venture from Ben Crofton and his wife Vanessa and comprises a group of Grade II listed buildings that are currently undergoing restoration to protect their significant heritage.

Alongside the restaurant there will be a bakery suppling the restaurant’s baked goods; Somerton Wines, which will stock a selection of around 150 wines; and an artisan ice cream shop.

Speaking of his new role, Fletcher says he cannot wait to get stuck in.

“It would have taken a lot to pull me away [from London], but as soon as I met Ben and Vanessa I knew that 28 Market Place was the perfect next step for me,” he adds.

“Working with fresh, local produce has always been key to my food philosophy, and this aligns so well with what they are looking to achieve and the space they’re building.”

Fletcher appeared on the 2018 series of the BBC’s Great British Menu, winning his North East regional heat with a menu dedicated to pioneering nurse Florence Nightingale.

Prior to his role at Fenchurch he worked under Tom Kitchin, Tommy Banks and Phil Howard.
