Upmarket wine-focused restaurant brand 28°-50° has taken the former Cantina Laredo site in Covent garden, bringing its total number of London restaurants to two.

Restaurant Property was the only agent involved in the sale of the 7,200 sq ft unit, which is located close to Dishoom on St Martin’s Courtyard off Upper St Martin’s Lane.

Co-founded by chef Agnar Sverrisson and sommelier Xavier Rousset, 28°-50° launched in Fetter Lane in Holborn in 2010 and later expanded to Mayfair’s Maddox Street and Marylebone Lane.

But in 2015 following the departure of Rousset the brand put all three of its sites on the market. Two now trade under other names but the Marylebone Lane location continues to trade under the 28°-50° brand under new ownership (Texture chef Sverrisson has now also left the business).

The Covent Garden restaurant is billed as a more modern and premium spin-off of its older sibling, offering a daily-changing menu of stylish modern European food, seafood and charcuterie alongside ‘more than 30 traditional and eclectic wines available by the glass, carafe and bottle’.

A franchise of the 30-strong US restaurant brand of the same name, Cantina Laredo opened in 2010 serving ‘gourmet Mexican food’. A rollout was mooted but never materialised.
