Michelin Guide 2020: The Lecture Room at Sketch wins three stars
The restaurant, run by Pierre Gagnaire and Mourad Mazouz, was upgraded from its two-star rating – which it has held since 2013 - at the launch of the latest edition of the red book this evening (7 October).
Three restaurants have been promoted from one to two stars: Anne-Sophie Pic’s La Dame de Pic in London; Niall Keating’s The Dining Room at Whatley Manor in the Cotswolds; and The Greenhouse in Dublin, which is run by Mikael Viljanen.
Aimsir at Cliff at Lyons in Kildare, Ireland, which focuses on foraged and preserved produce, entered the guide for the first time with two stars.
Manchester also received its long-awaited star for Simon Martin’s Mana, the first restaurant to win the accolade in the city centre for 40 years.
Wales gained a star for Beach House in Oxwich, while The Muddler's Club in Belfast was a new entry for Northern Ireland.
In Scotland there were single stars for Condita in Edinburgh and the Isle of Eriska hotel restaurant.
“Despite the obvious challenges being faced by the industry here in the UK, we are thrilled that this has been such a stellar year, and we have seen many first ventures opening and rapidly rising to success,” says Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin guides.
“With three Michelin Stars, Sketch joins four other restaurants at this prestigious level. This Pierre Gagnaire restaurant won its first star in 2005 and its second in 2013. Our inspectors judge the cooking here to be wonderfully complex and highly original, with each element of the meal excelling in terms of structure, composition and, above all, flavour.”
