Businesses can continue to provide takeout services, and Johnson said the situation will be reviewed each month.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak also unveiled an economic package which will see the Government pay 80% of the salary of staff who cannot work due to the outbreak, up to £2,500 a month.
Speaking in Downing Street, Johnson said: “I am confident in time the UK economy is going to bounce back, but the speed of our eventual recovery depends on our ability to get on top of the virus now.”
He added that while closing restaurants was a big move, it was necessary to protect people’s safety.
The government is to relax rules to allow restaurants to operate as hot food takeaways without the need for planning permission.
