A crowdfund campaign to support NHS staff, which is partly spearheaded by healthy fast food chain Leon, has reached its £1m target.

The ‘Feed the NHS’ campaign, which was launched by actors Helen McCrory, Damian Lewis and Matt Lucas late last month, sought to raise £1m in order to help feed NHS workers one hot healthy meal each day.

At the time of writing, the campaign total sits at £1,057,305.35.

Having hit the target over the Easter weekend, Lewis wrote on the campaign’s JustGiving page: “Wow, we've reached £1m. Thank you to the 24,000 people who have been so generous as to help us get there.

“All your money turns into meals, and we served 35,000 of them last week to 11 London hospitals. Next week we'll serve 45,000 more, and go to Birmingham and Manchester. Let's keep going as there is so much more we can do for our NHS.”

McCrory, Lewis and Lucas initially teamed up with Leon to deliver 6,000 meals a day to London hospitals, with a view to taking the campaign national as it gained momentum.

Alongside Leon, other London-based restaurant groups that have pledged to support 'Feed the NHS' include Wasabi; Tortilla; Peach Pubs; Rosa’s Thai; Hop; Pizza Pilgrims; Franco Manca; Farmer J; Tossed; Haché; Abokado; Dishoom; and Nusa Kitchen.

According to The i, money raised through the funding page will go directly to NHS Trusts, who will then purchase meals - at cost - from those restaurants involved, with each meal priced at between £2 and £3.
