Greene King is to expand its recently launched ‘pub grub’ delivery and takeaway service to select locations across the country.

Having begun trialling the service from a number of sites in its London-based Metropolitan Pub Company division last month, the pubco says it plans to roll out the service to 40 of its sites across the north-west, East Anglia and East Midlands from next Wednesday (10 June).

Click-and-collect will be available from all locations via the Greene King app or over the phone, and all but two of the reopened pubs will also offer delivery through Deliveroo or Just Eat.

Despite having to close its entire estate as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, Greene King has continued to sell bottled beers, cider and wine through its online shop during the lockdown. However, the 'pub grub' service also allows customers to order a selection of Greene King dishes including burgers, beer-battered fish and chips, and roast dinners.

Strict guidelines will be in place at every reopened site to ensure the health and safety of staff, delivery riders, and customers. Measures being implemented include social distancing, the availability of PPE, and a one-way system for customers to collect orders.

“We know the British public are missing the pub, so with pubs still closed for now the pub experience at home is the next best thing,” says Greene King CEO Nick Mackenzie.

“Our click and collect takeaway and delivery services in London have been a huge success and customer feedback is that they love they can order for the whole household, with everyone choosing their favourite dish and not restricted to just one style of cuisine.”

“Health and safety remains the guiding principle for all our decision making around offering takeaway and delivery services so that our teams feel protected at work and customers feel safe when they visit.”

Last month Greene King announced it had set up an employee support fund to help its workers that had been affected by the Coronavirus crisis.

The ‘Team Member Support Fund’, which was launched in partnership with the Licensed Trade Charity, was set up with an initial donation of £300,000 from Greene King that was raised from a combination of senior team salary cuts and a company donation.

An additional £2,794 has been raised so far through the campaign's GoFundMe page.
