Adejoké ‘Joké’ Bakare to launch first restaurant

In Brixton Village, Chishuru will highlight the lesser-known dishes of West Africa combining fresh British and African produce and utilising modern cooking techniques ‘to preserve the heart of her region’s food’.

Bakare - who previously ran a well-regarded supper club that was also called Chishuru - won the amateur category in last year’s Brixton Kitchen competition, which was organised and supported by Hondo Enterprises and judged by chefs including Jackson Boxer, James Cochran and Claire Ptak.

Chishuru’s menu of West African dishes will include the likes of goat ayamase (slow-cooked goat shoulder with spiced green sauce); groundnut soup with chargrilled cauliflower in a spiced peanut butter sauce; and baobab mousse with peanut ice cream, malted millet and sorghum molasses granola.

The menu will be priced at £28 for four courses, with a two course lunch time menu for £15 also available.

“Winning for me was a major step towards fulfilling my dream of introducing my vision of West African cuisine to the London food scene,” she says.

“The feedback Chishuru has received so far has been wonderful. I’m so glad to be able to bring pleasure with my food, and introduce the cuisine of our region to more people.

“I’m grateful to be given the opportunity to pursue this path, and very much looking forward to working with Brixton Village and the support of Hondo.”
