Bakery chain Greggs and fast food giant KFC are among the national chains that will continue to keep their entire estates open throughout the second country-wide lockdown in England.

At the onset of the first national lockdown back in March most operators opted to shut their doors temporarily, despite being able to open for takeaway and delivery under the rules, over fears for staff safety and overcrowding.

This time, however, many have pledged to remain open throughout the shutdown, which begins today (5 November) and is set to last at least four weeks, having installed extra Covid-safe protocols to ensure they can continue to operate.

As before, while hospitality venues must close for dine-in guests during the second lockdown, takeaway and delivery services may continue.

Greggs says it will keep all 1,039 of its stores open for takeaway, with customers also able to order for click and collect or delivery via Just Eat.

A spokesman for the company said: “In accordance with the latest Government guidelines, Greggs shops across the UK will remain open for takeaway, click and collect and delivery.”

Other chains to confirm they will keep their estates open include fried chicken giant KFC; Pret A Manger; Taco Bell; and Costa Coffee.

It comes after McDonald's announced earlier this week that it would also keep its entire estate open during the lockdown for takeaway, drive thru and delivery.

CEO Paul Pomroy said that a number of 'significant' operational changes would be implemented in response to the Government's new lockdown announcement including fewer people working on each shift; a reduced menu, with some restaurants also operating on reduced hours; additional Perspex screens in kitchens and service areas; and additional safety, cleaning and PPE procedures.

Fellow burger slingers Burger King and Five Guys are also understood to be keeping sites open during the lockdown, although it is not known if this will apply to the whole of their respective estates.
