Sven-Hanson Britt, Tris Hillier and Scott Ward have launched restaurant on the London City Island development on Leamouth Peninsula in Docklands with former Maze chef James Durrant as executive chef.

The Oxeye chef and MasterChef the Professionals: Rematch Champion has teamed up with Ward; formerly of JKS and Maze and partner in F&B strategy and concept management business Unlocked; and Hillier, managing director at hospitality projects agency Kanvass Projects, to open all-day dining restaurant Homestead.

The kitchen will be led by executive chef Durrant with Martin Renshaw, previously GM at Ruya and formerly of Jason Atherton’s Social Company, as general manager.

For the initial opening period, Homestead will operate as a takeaway kitchen, deli and store for collection, with an offer that will reflect the dine-in menu once the restaurant is able to open.

Take-away options will include salads, sandwiches - including a chicken Kiev option with raw cabbage and Caesar dressing and roast pork belly, ham and chicken liver terrine bahn mi - quiches and pies as well as hot dishes such as aubergine massaman curry; and chorizo and peppered salami pizza mozzarella.

During lockdown, Homestead has partnered with Brewdog to bring a mobile bar to serve a range of beers to take away.

Once restrictions have been lifted, the east London restaurant will serve an extensive breakfast menu in the morning, through to evenings dinners, with a charcoal grill an integral part of the cooking process.

“The East London food scene has completely changed over the past few months, meaning everything we knew before about eating out is now different,” says Britt.

“Whilst in the pre-opening phase of Oxeye, we had time to think about how to launch a different style of business here at City Island; something that is solely focused on delivering the very best ingredients to our community.

“It’s all about provenance, the story, the ethics and the traceability behind the products. Ultimately, Homestead is all about community, which we will contribute to by delivering something meaningful to our ever-growing family of neighbours here in East London.”
