Over two thirds of hospitality operators say they expect to be in a tier 3 style lockdown in January following the busy Christmas period, during which people can meet outside of their bubbles for a small number of days.

Leaders in the hospitality sector have expressed scepticism that there will be a quick return to normality, with just 8% of the hospitality operators asked saying they are confident things will be back to some sort of normality come spring despite the announcement of a vaccine, according to Lumina Intelligence’s latest Hospitality Leaders Poll

The weekly poll, conducted by Lumina Intelligence for BigHospitality, Restaurant, MCA, and The MA, has found that overall confidence in the sector is rising, however, with the percentage of hospitality operators asked who are 'not confident' in the future of their business improved marginally from 54% to 49% week on week

In terms of the current rules by which operators in tier 3 have to abide, the poll has found that less than half of operators (44%) either don't know or are unsure what constitutes a substantial meal – which is required to be served with any alcoholic drink.

It also that 28% of the hospitality operators asked are 'fairly relaxed' and leaving it 'up to customer discretion' when enforcing the rules around household mixing and serving a substantial meal alongside drinks

Looking to 16 December, when the Government will review the tier system in England, 23% of the hospitality operators asked believe their tier will change as a result of the review.
