Chef Aman Lakhiani is to open a high-end yakitori restaurant in Marylebone within the Seymour Place site that was once home to Indian restaurant Romna.

Meaning ‘pure’ in Japanese, Junsei will soft launch next week ahead of an official opening early next month and is the debut solo restaurant for the Indosinian-born Lakhiani, whose CV includes spells at a number of high-reaching international restaurants, including Bali's Locavore and Barcelona's Dos Palillos.

The menu will lead with 20 different chicken-based skewers alongside vegetarian options including shiitake mushrooms and soy marinated quail eggs.

Whilst the skewers are the main event, the menu will also offer sharing plates including cuttlefish somen with a cucumber mirin soy sauce; A4 wagyu, seared at the table; and rice donabe (clay pot) with red mullet or seasonal vegetables.

The restaurant will also offer an omakase chef’s menu that features eight skewers (some exclusive to the menu) and sides for £48.

The drinks menu offers an extensive selection of sake and shochu alongside a Japan-inspired cocktail menu.

Interiors will be pared-back to let the 'spectacle of the food take centre stage' with light oak flooring, grey leather chairs, a statement banquette and brass finishings and minimal Japanese artwork.

There will be 38 covers in the main dining room plus a further five covers on Junsei's chef's table, which offers diners front row seats to the restaurant's open grill.

Front of house will be led by Lakhiani's business partner Rizwan Khan, whose CV includes The Cinnamon Club and Kanishka.

Junsei is hot on the heels of Humble Chicken, the yakitori restaurant launched by Angelo Sato in Soho last month.
