California-based pizza concept Pieology is opening its first restaurant in the UK as part of its plans to grow across Europe.

The fast-casual customisable pizza brand will make its UK debut in the capital this year following UK-based owners Kim Nagpal and Gavin Sutharmasellan of Camyabco signing a franchise deal.

Pieology offers customisable pizzas as well as a range of signature pizzas, including the chicken bacon ranch; fire grilled barbecue chicken; and veggie pesto pizza alongside classics such as a margherita; Hawaiian; and pepperoni. Its menu also features customisable salads and sides such as a cinnamon churro pizza.

The brand was founded in California in 2011 and has around 130 venues worldwide, including in Mexico, China and Spain.

“We are excited to start our journey in the UK and look forward to bringing both Gavin and Kim’s food service experience and expertise to the brand,” says Gregg Imamto, Pieology chief executive.

“As Pieology continues to expand globally with the right partners, we’re very confident in Gavin and Kim and their strategy to grow our brand long-term.”

Pieology is the latest US-based customisable pizza brand attempting to crack the UK market. Last year Seattle-based MOD Pizza closed its UK business, which was backed by Carphone Warehouse founder Sir Charles Dunstone, having made its debut in Leeds in 2016.

At its height the group operated 10 UK restaurants in locations including London, Borehamwood, Leeds, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Romford, Watford and Gateshead.
