Hospitality entrepreneur Chelsea Finch is to launch an all-day café and wine bar on Frederick’s Place in the City of London next month.

Where’s Fred’s will be open each day for brunch and lunch, before switching to a grazing menu of sharing plates in the evening that will be complemented by low-intervention wines chosen by Finch in collaboration with Emma Underwood.

Finch describes Where’s Fred’s as being 'an evolution' of her three-strong café brand District, which has sites in Parsons Green, Nine Elms and Mayfair.

Brunch options to feature on the menu include pan con tomate with fried eggs; truffle egg croissant; and banana bread made to Finch's own recipe and topped with Greek yoghurt, roasted figs and pistachios.

Lunch, meanwhile, will include a choice of sandwiches, as well as hot dishes such as spaghetti vongole or steak and vintage cheddar pie, which will all be available to either eat in or takeaway.

The evening menu will feature oysters Kilpatrick, with shucked oysters topped with bacon, butter and Worcestershire sauce; burrata with roasted squash and pesto; and cannellini beans with cavolo nero and parmesan.

Working with The Pem's Emma Underwood, Finch has assembled a list of mostly European wines from land-focused producers to serve alongside the food, sourced from suppliers including Under The Bonnet, Les Caves de Pyrene, and Winemakers’ Club.

Running to about 20 bins, many of which will be available by the glass, Finch and Underwood hope the wine list will 'help demystify low-intervention wines for those who might be unsure about them'.

The design of the Mercers’ Company-owned space, overseen by Finch and realised by Block1: Design, will feature exposed brickwork; plenty of natural light from tall front windows; and banquette seating.

“Where’s Fred’s is an evolution of the things District does so well for daytime – those easy, satisfying brunch dishes that everyone loves, and seriously good coffee – with the addition for evening of great classic cocktails, sociable, shareable food, and of course amazing natural wines,” says Finch.

“As soon as I was shown this magical site by the Mercers’ Company, I knew that I wanted to do something special with it. Frederick’s Place is a charming location that you would mostly find by word-of-mouth; it feels hidden away but is right in the heart of the Square Mile.

“There’s nowhere quite like Where’s Fred’s in the City of London, and I hope that it will quickly become part of the fabric of the community for workers, residents and visitors alike.”
