Edinburgh-based Neapolitan pizza brand Matto Pizza is to launch its 'first dedicated restaurant' later this month in the city’s Morningside neighbourhood.

The new pizzeria on 370-372 Morningside Road will hold 42 covers and serve a menu of Neapolitan-style pizzas alongside a selection of 'authentic' Italian starters and desserts.

Matto launched its first  site on Cadzow Place in the centre of the Scottish capital in September 2020. Owing to having limited indoor seating, the space primarily operates as a takeaway hub, leading the group to designate the Morningside location as its 'first dedicated restaurant'.

Matto uses a 'state-of-the-art' wood-fired oven that cooks the pizzas, which are made with a slow-rise 00 flour dough, in 60 seconds.

With a name which means ‘crazy’ in Italian, the menu features a range of eclectic pizza options that includes a tomato base pizza with mozzarella, lamb, haggis, onion, yogurt and mint sauce; a truffle cream base pizza with smoked cheese, mushrooms and rocket; and a pumpkin base pizza with ‘nduja, gorgonzola, pumpkin seeds and fresh basil.

The Morningside menu will also feature new additions such as a pea purée base pizza with smoked speck, gorgonzola, mozzarella, figs, rocket and balsamic glaze drizzle.

Edinburgh-based S-SO has overseen the restaurant's design, which incorporates bold prints and bright colour for a dramatic effect and includes both group dining spaces and smaller, intimate seating areas.
