Boparan Restaurant Group (BRG) is to trial the use of two service robots in one of its restaurants, with a view to expanding their use across its wider estate.

The KettyBot robots, designed and built by Pudu Robotics, are being trialled at BRG’s latest Slim Chickens restaurant in Guildford, which launched earlier this month.

Programmed to be fully automated, the robots can engage with guests through spoken conversation, take orders and deliver dishes, both to tables and for collection.

Infrared cameras, laser radars and sensors are used to ensure smooth transitions, navigation and obstacle avoidance.

“We are committed to evolving the guest experience whilst supporting our teams in delivering the quality food and hospitality that Slim Chickens and BRG are famous for,” says Nick Smith, commercial director of BRG.

The group, which also operates Carluccio’s and Gourmet Burger Kitchen, says the robots will be rolled out across its nationwide estate of more than 100 restaurants if the trial proves successful.

Smith states that BRG doesn't plan to replace its team members with robots, but that they are there to support them and make their jobs easier.

“The robots, along with our kiosks, app and table ordering, are the next stage in our digital journey.”

BRG isn't the first group to trial the use of robot waiters.

In late 2020, Rare Restaurants begun using Champagne-serving droids at its two M restaurants in London Victoria and the City. More recently, Taiwanese restaurant chain Din Tai Fung launched a restaurant in Selfridges with two robot waiters among the front of house team.
