Salon, the popular Brixton restaurant run by Nicholas Balfe, Matthew Bushnell and Mark Gurney, has permanently shut its doors with challenging trading conditions cited as the reason behind the decision.

In a joint statement the trio confirmed the closure of the restaurant, which launched in London's Brixton Market back in 2012.

They said: “It is with a deep reluctance and heavy heart that we have decided to close Salon. It has been an incredible ten year journey for us and the team in Brixton.

“The market has provided us with a brilliant home, a space to develop our menus and host a whole range of diners - from locals to those further afield.

“Industry trading conditions continue to be more challenging than ever, unfortunately meaning we have had to make this difficult decision.

“We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us over the years.”

Salon started out life as a pop up above the Cannon & Cannon deli in Brixton Market, before eventually evolving into a semi permanent venture and later a fully functioning restaurant, all the time specialising in fine seasonal British cuisine.

In August 2016, the team took over the downstairs area and installed a bar, which served a range of cocktails, low intervention, organic and biodynamic wines, as well as craft beers and artisanal spirits.

The following year, they also launched a wine shop in the unit next door to Salon selling 130 lines of low intervention, organic and biodynamic wine from across the world. BigHospitality has confirmed that the wine shop will close alongside the restaurant.

Balfe, Bushnell and Gurney continue to operate Peckham restaurants Levan and Larry's. Last year the trio also launched their first rural outpost in the village of South Petherton, Somerset, called Holm.
