Michelin-starred restaurant Northcote is launching a two-year long apprenticeship scheme for chefs.

The Lancashire-based restaurant, led by chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen, is looking for five successful applicants for the programme. Apprentices will earn a minimum of £7 per hour and receive the same benefits as Northcote employees working a 40-hour, 5 days a week 9am to 5pm pattern.

Apprentices will work closely with Goodwin-Allen and will be enrolled in Northcote’s training provider, which works together with the kitchen management team to schedule and oversee education, progression and development.

After successful completion of the programme, all students will be offered a permanent contract as a Northcote chef. The scheme will continue to invest in their development, offering future promotional opportunities. Successful apprentices will receive a level 2 or 3 qualification in Professional Cookery.

Other benefits will include up to 50% staff discount on food and beverage throughout the Stafford Collection, staff accommodation if required and up to £3,000 bonus paid bi-monthly.

The restaurant is one of a number of hospitality businesses that have introduced or are launching apprenticeship schemes in order to tackle staff shortages in the sector. London-based JKS Restaurants will launch its scheme for both front of house and back of house staff in September and last month pub group Greene King said it would recruit 5,000 more apprentices and 300 prison leavers as part of its drive to fill job vacancies.

Cornwall-based Rick Stein group also recently launched a Chef Apprenticeship scheme targeting anyone over the age of 16 to start before September 2022.

Apprentices will learn on the job from the group’s senior chefs and will receive a Level 2 in Professional Cookery qualification on successfully completing the course.
