The Coaching Inn Group has acquired three outposts in the South West including the iconic Jamaica Inn to take its estate beyond 30 sites.

The acquisition of the Mooreland Hotel, Jamaica Inn, and the Swan Hotel continues The Coaching Inn Group’s recent run of high-quality acquisitions, adding the popular holiday destinations of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset to its portfolio.

Acquired by RedCat, the investment vehicle founded and chaired by former Greene King chief executive Rooney Anand, last August, The Coaching Inn Group operates historic coaching inns in market towns across the UK in areas including the Cotswolds, Peak District, Leicestershire, Staffordshire, and Cambridgeshire.

This latest announcement brings the number of pub hotels owned by the group to 32.

“I am pleased to have increased our presence in the South West with this trio of acquisitions – including potentially the most famous Inn in Britain with The Jamaica Inn,” says Kevin Charity, chief executive of The Coaching Inn Group.

“All three inns are incredibly high-quality additions to The Coaching Inn Group and we are continuing to work alongside RedCat to expand our portfolio in popular holiday locations in the UK focusing on areas of natural beauty. We look forward to preserving the history of each inn, which has served as an attraction for tourists and guests.”

The Jamaica Inn is a renowned hotel pub in Cornwall, made famous by Daphne du Maurier’s best-selling novel Jamaica Inn following her enforced stay in November 1930. The inn has 36 bedrooms and suites including carefully preserved ‘old rooms’ alongside a Smuggling Museum, displaying artefacts and bringing the stories to life. The sale was brokered by Knight Frank, acting on behalf of the owners.

The Mooreland Hotel is set in the desirable location of Dartmoor, sitting at the base of Haytor. The hotel has seen visits from famous figures including Agatha Christie – who wrote her first novel over a two week stay at the hotel. The Moreland Hotel was renovated in 2017 and features panoramic views across the moorland and tor tops. The sale was brokered by Savills, acting on behalf of the owners.

The Swan Hotel is a four-star, boutique hotel situated with a view of the Wells Cathedral. The hotel has recently benefitted from investment to restore and extend the 50 bedrooms, suites and apartments in keeping with its original charm. The Swan is thought to be the oldest permanently trading hostelry in the UK, after welcoming its first guests over 600 years ago. Contracts have been exchanged on the property, pending completion. The sale was brokered by SSA Hotels, acting on behalf of the owners.

RedCat has grown strongly since inception in February 2021, having acquired over 100 pubs and pub hotels, now amounting to a hotel room estate of over 1,200 rooms.

“RedCat and the Coaching Inn Group are delighted to be increasing our footprint through these exceptional pub hotels,” says Anand.

“Together, we have nearly doubled the portfolio since RedCat acquired the business last year and it continues to go from strength-to-strength. We are confident that our strategy to invest in high-quality pub hotels, offering the best possible service and good value is the right one for customers.”
