Birmingham City Council has unanimously approved plans for developer Hammerson’s redevelopment of the former John Lewis site in the city’s Grand Central complex.

A mixed-use development with 200,00 sq ft of office space, Drum takes its name from the instrument-like design of the building and will have 40,000 sq ft of hospitality space on its ground floor and will also feature a premium grocery offer, gym, wellbeing amenities and an events space.

The new space will extend the former department store’s atrium through all the four floors of the building to include a sweeping, open, communal entrance.

It will also lead to a newly created rooftop garden lounge, while green walls on each level will give the appearance of the garden spilling back down through the building.

The workspace is expected to accommodate up to 2,000 people and are billed as the best-connected offices in the city.

“We welcome Birmingham City Council’s approval of our plans, with the decision a significant boost to Birmingham’s reputation as a city for business, one that is progressive, dynamic and setting the benchmark for others to follow across the UK," says chief development and asset repositioning officer at Hammerson Harry Badham.

"Drum is a great demonstration of how Hammerson’s creativity and a deep understanding of occupier needs can create assets that thrive by diversifying their purpose to accommodate an even greater range of uses and users.”
