London-based premium fried chicken brand Thunderbird is to launch its latest dark kitchen location today (21 January), which will mark its first venture into the suburbs of the capital.

The site in Croydon joins Battersea and Shoreditch as the Trispan-backed chain's third Food Stars kitchen, with delivery available via Deliveroo and UberEats.

Thunderbird's recently launched plant-based delivery-only brand, Jackfruit Junkie, will also delivery from the Croydon kitchen.

The vegan menu, which features burgers, jackfruit wings and sides,  is all prepared on site in separate vegan fryers.

Burgers options include the 'Junkie', which features a jackfruit patty, vegan 'cheeze', hash browns, house-made chipotle mayo, pink pickled onions, lettuce and pickles; and the 'BBQ' burger with fried onions, 'sweet and sticky' barbecue sauce, ranch sauce, lettuce and pickles.

The jackfruit wings, meanwhile, are sourced from vegan ‘junk’ food brand Biff’s Kitchen and are available served with either a barbecue or buffalo hot sauce marinade.

“Jackfruit Junkie is enabling us to showcase our newly developed indulgent vegan food offering," says Thunderbird founder Matt Harris.

"Based on the same principles I had when setting up Thunderbird Fried Chicken, we strive for perfection in delivering the most crave-worthy plant-based food you can find. We hope people will agree.”

Alongside its three delivery kitchens, Thunderbird continues to operate restaurants in Charing Cross and The O2, as well as a unit at Pergola Paddington.

In February last year, prior to the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic, the group closed its original bricks and mortar restaurant in Brixton, with Trispan operating partner Robin Rowland describing Thunderbird at the time as a 'work in progress'.
