Events catering specialist and restaurant operator Rhubarb has opened a 'new and improved' airside restaurant at Heathrow's Terminal Three.

The operator closed the original site, which it had opened in August 2008, last November in conjunction with a major refurbishment of the terminal and decided to relocate to a larger site when the opportunity arose.

The 130-cover Rhubarb Restaurant & Bar, in its second incarnation, opened at the southern end of the terminal in the unit formerly occupied by TGI Fridays and next to clothing store Thomas Pink two weeks ago following six months of redesign and building work.

Rhubarb managing director Pieter-Bas Jacobse said: "The new look is fresh, contemporary and very stylish. We have evolved our original concept to accommodate a larger format which appeals to discerning travelers who are looking for a quality food offer whilst in transit.”

Menu change

Rhubarb's British menu with global influence has been tweaked to cater for a wider audience. Classic dishes such as the Mile High Club Sandwich remain while there are new additions such as Cod Friendly fish & chips and Prawn & Chive Dumplings. The operator is aiming for a turnover of £3.5m per year.

Helen Bowey, retail director at Rhubarb, said: "We are raising the bar in airport catering standards, bringing 15 years of experience from the events and restaurant world to create a unique and delicious food and drink offer. We expect customers to be surprised and delighted at the great range of dishes available, served promptly and with exceptional quality.”

The operator, who just this week announced plans to work with Heston Blumenthal on future events catering projects, is also planning to open a second Rhubarb Restaurant & Bar at London's City Airport next month.
