Rob Shenton and Charlie Bunn, the respective owners of Brighton restaurant Riddle and Finn’s and Hickstead Estate, are launching are music-driven restaurant on the south coast.

Drifter will officially open this week on Brighton seafront in the historic Kings Road arches at the site that was most recently home to restaurant Due South.

Inspired by Japan’s analogue listening bars, where people go to listen to music, Drifter is the brainchild of hospitality consultant Jake Northcote-Green and will have an exclusively vinyl music policy. Music will include low-key jazz, 90s boom bap, soul, and African disco.

The 70-cover, two-storey site has an outdoor terrace and offers views over the beach.

It will serve a small selection of locally sourced seafood small plates cooked in a wood-fired oven and a drinks menu focused on natural wines.

“We wanted to create a relaxed space on the seafront that represents the diversity and vibrancy of Brighton’s food and music scene,” says Northcote-Green.

“We chose a strictly vinyl music policy as these recordings represent a moment in time. It’s someone saying: look at what I have created, please enjoy it. I love that.”
