It’s been an eventful week for hospitality – with Brexit and industry awards dominating the main headlines. Here’s our pick of the top news.
  • This week saw The National Restaurant Awards 2016 presented at private members’ club The Hurlingham Club in Putney, south west London. The Sportsman pub in Kent picked up the top prize, while Barrafina Adelaide Street came in second, and The Ledbury was in third. Many other awards were handed out too, including Highest New Entry to Piquet, Chef’s Chef of the Year to Philip Howard, and Lifetime Achievement to Pierre Koffmann.
  • Speaking of awards, the University College Birmingham won the Toque d’Or 2016 competition, with the team comprising of Megan Lyke, Katie Lewis and Jack Gameson. The prize was awarded at a special awards lunch at The Dorchester hotel on Friday 24 June, in front of some of the industry’s biggest names, including Anton Mosimann and Simon Hulstone.
  • As the country comes to terms with its divisions following the referendum vote for Brexit, reactions were mixed throughout the week. However, at the British Hospitality Association summit, BHA chairman Nick Varney said that the result would actually open up opportunities for hospitality, and would allow tourism and leisure to grow.
  • There was more from the BHA Hospitality Summit, as speakers spoke about hospitality’s fears for the future, and contemplated how it could face up to them. The event, at The Grange Hotel in London, addressed issues such as staffing, skills, the economy, tourism VAT, and the ongoing need to embrace change.
  • Finally, yesterday the general manager of the Grosvenor House hotel in London, Stuart Bowery, announced its aims to become known for more than its Great Room – an impressive ballroom space ‒ after its £8m refurbishment of its public spaces. “We have so much more going on here,” he said. “The Park Room’s new look will help us to shout about what we have to offer a little bit more.”
