Leung, who coined the term 'X-treme Chinese' to describe his style of cooking, will open BO London in Mill Street, Mayfair this September.

The self-taught chef, who was born in London before moving to Canada and then Hong Kong, said the UK's capital had been on his radar for some time.

"I have wanted to open a place in London for years. I love the city and am frequently here," he said. "I think London offers one of the most diverse and exciting restaurant scenes in the world and I would really like Bo to be a part of that."

Food style

Leung's plans to come to the UK were first revealed by Restaurant magazine in January in its outlook for the year ahead

The chef, sometimes referred to as 'The Demon', has a unique approach to Chinese cuisine, combining old recipes with modern cooking techniques. His X-treme Chinese style is designed to break the mould of traditional Chinese food and he has created some innovative and wacky dishes such as Sex on the Beach, which features an edible condom.

The front-of-house style of Leung's restaurant is also more relaxed than many of its Chinese counterparts with staff given free-reign to sport multi-coloured hair and tattoos.

Leung said: “I like to challenge people’s expectations, to surprise and excite them. My aim is to have people say ‘That was the best meal I’ve ever had’…and I just work backwards from that”.

BO London will be Leung's first restaurant outside Hong Kong with the menu set to feature signature dishes from BO Innovation and some new dishes inspired by British food and ingredients.

BO Innovation, which received two Michelin stars in 2008, was voted number 52 in the 2012 list of World's Best Restaurants
