Marriott Hotels in top 60 greenest companies
Hotel chain Marriott ranks 17th in the Sunday Times Green List - making it the highest ranking green hospitality company in Britain

Marriott Hotels is being dubbed Britain`s greenest hotel chain after ranking 17th in this year`s Sunday Times Green List.

The company also won top prize in the category for `large companies with a medium environmental impact` in the accompanying awards after impressing judges with its green initiatives for the business and for staff.

Govert Deketh, environment chairman of London Marriott Business Council said: "We have been working very hard to reduce the impact that we have on the environment. Environmental awareness is at the core of how we do business every day."

Some of the hotel chain`s green initiatives include replacing 20-watt bulb welcome lights with 1.5-watt light-emitting diodes and trialling water-saving shower heads. Employees also contribute to its green credentials - 70 per cent travel to work by bus and some cycle and use the hotel`s shower and changing facilities.

Marriott is also looking to reduce its carbon footprint by 25 per cent by 201, which includes using solar power at up to 40 hotels and expanding its reduce, reuse, recycle programmes to include guest and meeting rooms.

To compile the list, the Sunday Times quizzed both the company`s management and its employees.

Richard Caseby, managing editor of The Sunday Times, said: "The 60 companies in this survey are all pioneers - enterprising, enlightened and fizzing with new ideas. All have a common sense of purpose about their corporate social responsibility.

"There may be plenty of environmental awards but this is the first that has both a robust methodology to measure environmental performance and a survey of each company`s staff to find out whether the green sheen is more than skin-deep."
