JD Wetherspoon (JDW) has been forced to take eggs off the menu on some of its breakfast dishes due to a national shortage.

The pub operator has been offering customers at the effected pubs alternatives such as hash browns, sausages or onion rings.

Supplies of eggs have been impacted by a reduction in production due to rising costs and the recent outbreak of avian flu, which has killed a million hens.

Producers have also been leaving the industry due to the inability to pass on the cost increases they are facing, with a survey by the British Free Range Egg Producers Association last week suggesting that 33% of producers had reduced chicken flock sizes, paused production temporarily or left the industry.

A spokesperson for JDW confirmed that it had been experiencing temporary issues with egg suppliers at some of its pubs.

“We are experiencing issues in receiving all the supplies we require to satisfy demand in every pub,” they said.

“This is not specific to Wetherspoon and other hospitality operators and supermarkets are facing similar issues.”

Retailers have also been struggling with supplies with Lidl and Asda both rationing the number of eggs it is allowing customers to buy.
