ION Harbour by Simon Rogan in Malta has been awarded its second Michelin star.

The second star comes just one year after the L’Enclume and Aulis chef took the helm at the restaurant, which is located within the Iniala Hotel in the Southern European island’s capital Valletta.

Today’s announcement brings Simon Rogan’s Umbel restaurant group up to a total of eight Michelin stars worldwide.

The chef’s Lake District flagship L’Enclume holds three while the nearby Rogan & Co holds one.

Away from the North West, Aulis in Soho holds a single Michelin star as does Roganic Hong Kong.

In addition, the group holds a total of two Michelin Green stars for L’Enclume and Roganic Hong Kong, which were both awarded in 2021.

ION Harbour by Simon Rogan is Malta’s first ever two Michelin star restaurant. There are currently six one Michelin star restaurants located on the island.

“Today is, without a doubt, one of the highlights of my career so far,” Rogan says. “My team and I arrived here just over a year ago, knowing that we wanted to bring something different to the island’s restaurant scene, continuing to share the farm-to-table ethos we are known for globally.”

“Most importantly, we wanted to ensure we worked as closely as possible with the suppliers and the produce on this beautiful island, whilst keeping sustainable practices front of mind. I am so proud of what we have achieved here so far, and alongside my executive chef Oli Marlow and the Iniala and ION Harbour team.”

The restaurant was awarded one Michelin star in 2021, under the helm of Andrew Borg.

Alex Dilling oversaw ION Harbour until early 2023, retaining its star for two years in a row.

Under Rogan’s direction, the restaurant offers a 13-course tasting menu that showcases both Rogan’s farm-to-table cooking style and the Mediterranean island’s own produce.
