Children`s menu

Pub and restaurant operator The Orchid Group has developed a new children`s menu with nutritionist and author Annabel Karmel after research showed that 88 per cent of parents were not happy with the food choices for children when eating out and 65 per cent were sneaking in their own food. The new menu, which includes Carmel`s spaghetti with hidden vegetable sauce and Thai chicken curry, will be launched in 34 of Orchid`s Contemporary Carveries before being rolled out to another 45 next month.

Cocktail DIY

Joel Lawrence, head mixologist at St James’s bar at St James’s Hotel and Club in London, is handing over the cocktail-making reins to his customers at a series of cocktail master classes. For £48 participants are given a cocktail and canape reception followed by an interactive class on cocktail making. Guests are then given the chance to design and create their own cocktail with a prize given to the best one. The next class is on May 27.

Sake for beginners

Japanese restaurant Bincho Yakitori is aiming to demystify the world of sake with Wednesday night Sake Crash Courses throughout June. Manager Mal Simpson and his team will give customers four different sakes and talk them through the different varieties and the customs surrounding their consumption. Light bites, prepared by head chef Hide Ohata, accompany the sakes and are including in the £20 course price.

Burgundy comes to Dover

Charlie Lakin, head chef at The Marquis in Alkham near Dover, will be creating a four-course menu to complement a selection of wines from Burgundy on June 2. On-trade wine supplier Nick Hillman will be on hand to talk diners through his selection. Matches include a Chablis Grand Cru with a walnut crusted Ragstone goat’s cheese and sweet pear puree and a Gevrey Chambertin with Lakin`s assiette of lamb. Diners will be charged £65 each.
