Busaba Eathai in Bicester and Smack in Leamington Spa are the headline winners of this year’s Restaurant and Bar Design Awards, announced last night in London.

Designed by David Archer Architects, Busaba Eathai in Bicester won the Best Multiple Restaurant category, which was also contended by Jamie’s Italian in Blacksheep, London, ASK in Dorking, Pizza Express in Richmond, Wildwood in Billericay, Rocket in London and Rosa’s in London.

The starkly-designed Smack, which features monochrome polaroids of club customers and graffiti on its walls courtesy of designer Steve Smith and Adrian Baynes, won the Best Independent Bar or Club category, having been up against Bar Pepito in London, The WM Club in London, The Corinthian Club in Glasgow, The Betsy Smith in London and The Alchemist in Manchester.

Over 330 entries were submitted to the 2011 awards, which last year saw Galvin Restaurants’ Galvin La Chapelle win the Best Overall Restaurant award and India’s The Tote pick up the Best Overall Bar Award.

Judges this year included the Evening Standard restaurant critic Fay Maschler, Srah Miller from Conde Nast Traveller and Ian Callum, design director at Jaguar Cars.
