Budget hotel chain Travelodge has created a further 65 jobs in its recently-launched 'Men in Black' maintenance division following the scheme's success and growth of its hotel estate.

The operator, which is set to open 42 new hotels this year, launched the initiative last year, which saw the creation of an in-house roving maintenance team to deal with problems as soon as they arise.

Members of the team are despatched to any of its 500 hotels to provide any aspect of maintenance support - from fixing appliances to plumbing and decorating meaning the problem can be dealt with quickly and without the need for external agencies.

Travelodge managing director Paul Harvey said: “I believe we are the only UK hotel company that invests in an in-house maintenance function.

"With having over 500 Travelodge’s and growing at good pace, employing direct trade professionals makes good business sense. It ensures we have a dedicated resource on hand; whose main objective is to ensure all of our hotels are in good working order at all times.

“Our MIB function has proven to be a valuable asset to the company and I am delighted we have created a further 65 nationwide new positions within the department. This investment will certainly strengthen our maintenance resource, which will result in a better service for our hotel staff and customers.”

Recruitment drive

As well as recruiting for more maintenance workers, of which eight are decorating roles, Travelodge is recruiting for 20 people to fill receptionist, cleaning and bar-cafe roles at hotels in London, Chester, Ipswich, Tamworth and Burton-upon-Trent.

It is also seeking staff for 15 positions in its head office at Thame in Oxfordshire, including revenue managers and yield managers.

Earlier this year the budget hotel operator said it was planning to open 184 more sites in London by 2025 creating an estimated 5,000 jobs in the capital.
