Pizza Express in Mumbai is the pizza operator's first in India and hopes to be one of many

Pizza Express has expanded its operation to India where it sees 'enormous potential' to grow within the fast-expanding Indian casual dining market.

The new restaurant in Colaba, Mumbai was opened by Pizza Express India, a partnership formed last year between PizzaExpress and the Bharti Family Office and means the company now has a presence in 11 countries outside the UK.

Harvey Smyth, chief executive of Gondola Group said the company was 'hugely excited' about the new opening "We believe that the Indian casual dining market offers enormous potential for PizzaExpress, and we are delighted to be working in partnership with the Bharti Family Office, which offers essential local expertise," he said.

Pizza Express's offering has been tailored for the local market with beef removed from the menu and more vegetables and spice added to it. The restaurant's design also features local influences and materials.

Pizza Express also operates restaurants in Cyprus, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Shanghai and UAE.
