Michelin Guide 2014: Two stars for Dinner by Heston Blumenthal and Greenhouse

The Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland 2014 has awarded Heston Blumenthal's Dinner and Mayfair restaurant Greenhouse two Michelin stars, while 15 other establishments including including Lima, Jason Atherton's Social Eating House and Tom Seller's Story have gained a first star.

There were no new three-star restaurants on this year's list and no three-star restaurants lost any stars. The new one-stars also include Wilks, a neighbourhood restaurant in Bristol, and Campagne, a family-run restaurant in Kilkenny. (view their reactions here)

Two seafood restaurants have been awarded one star - Angler in Moorgate and Outlaw’s at The Capital in London.​Two Chinese restaurants - HKK​and Bo London​also made their Michelin star debut.

Dinner for two

Having only opened Dinner at the end of 2010, Heston Blumenthal has seen his Mandarin Oriental restaurant shoot to fame, with the restaurant now among 21 establishments to hold two stars. "It's absolutely brilliant, said Blumenthal. "I am overjoyed. It’s great news for Ashley (Palmer-Watts) and the whole team. It’s been an incredible two-and-a-half years for Dinner and this is just simply the highlight.

Dinner was the highest new entry and highest placed UK venue in last year's World's 50 Best Restaurants list.

"As a Brit, I am very proud that a restaurant inspired by and celebrating historic British cooking has been recognised today."

Dinner's head chef Palmer-Watts added: "Wow. This is just incredible news and an achievement for the entire team at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. Everyone works so hard every day and myself and Heston are so proud of each and every one of them. I am just blown away."

The Michelin Guide's editor Rebecca Burr said the tyre company has 'never produced a GB & Ireland guide that provides readers with such diversity and variety'.

“Fantastic B&Bs, wonderful pubs, stylish hotels, world-class restaurants and great-value eateries – we have them all in our guide," said Burr. "In the past year we’ve seen the rise of relaxed counter dining but also the opening of some big brasseries. Dining is becoming a less structured, less formal affair and opening times and menus are more flexible to reflect the way we live our lives. Single concept restaurants focusing on one or two dishes have also continued to open."

London restaurants

With nine of the 15 new Michelin-starred restaurants based in London, Burr added that the capital 'has never offered so much choice'. “The Michelin guide has always reflected what’s out there. In London there really is something for everyone and for every occasion and there appears to be no end to the number of exciting new restaurant openings. With cuisines and culinary influences from all parts of the globe, it’s no surprise that the capital is one of the most exciting cities in the world for food. 

“We’ve seen internationally acclaimed chefs open restaurants over here but we’re also delighted to witness the rise of the next generation of talented British chefs and the continued evolution of British cooking.” 

Jason Atherton's 70-cover bistro-style restaurant comes complete with a chef's table and a 'secret' upstairs bar

Jason Atherton was among the big-name chefs to win a star this year. Two years after launching Pollen Street Social, the chef recently brought two new restaurants to the capital. The largest of the two was Social Eating House, a partnership with former Pollen Street Social head chef Paul Hood. In a video interview with BigHospitality ahead of the restaurant's launch,​ Atherton said he had chosen to open the 70-cover bistro-style restaurant complete with chef's table and separate bar in order to invest in Hood in the same way Gordon Ramsay invested in him earlier in his career.

Another new Michelin-starred restaurant which only opened this year is Brasserie Chavot, adjacent to the Westbury Hotel in Mayfair. Chef Eric Chavot, who returned to the UK from a two-year stint in America,​told BigHospitality he was glad to be back. "I’ve got a family and my two boys, so I’m glad to be back here, but I didn’t miss the weather,” he said. “The work ethic is completely different in America and I had to adapt myself, but I’m glad I did it.”

There were no new Michelin stars in Scotland or Wales. 

Some restaurants will not be celebrating today. L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon in London is downgraded from two to a one-star status and five restaurants have lost their one star: The Hamborough on the Isle of Wight, Petersham Nurseries Café in London, Burlington in North Yorkshire, Locks Brassserie in Dublin and Dining Room at Mallory in Warwickshire.

The paper version of the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2014 will be available in bookshops from 4 October 2013, priced at £15.99. It is also published on the same day is the Michelin Guide London 2014, priced at £11.99.
