Cask ale brewer Greene King is bringing ‘the next generation of learning’ to its Hungry Horse pubs, with the launch of a series of training apps for its members of staff.

The apps, developed in partnership with Charnwood Training Group will deliver one-to-one coaching sessions and refresher training classes for employees at the 200-plus Hungry Horse sites across the UK.

“In developing these apps, we have created an innovative, visual and engaging method of training that is able to reach the large number of technology users among our teams,” said Greene King’s group HR director John Smith.

Three subjects were chosen for the initial selection of 14 apps: steak grilling, burrito preparation and balloon modelling. Each contains a video demonstrating the activity being performed perfectly. They can be accessed via a QR code and are available on smartphones and tablets.

Greene King says a key benefit of the new app is that new recruits do not have to wait and ask for assistance; they can be independent in their learning and have immediate access to a library of skills and industry knowledge.

Further training apps are now being developed on a range of other topics.
