Italian restaurant company San Carlo Group is fattening up its Birmingham presence with the opening of a £1m Fumo restaurant, champagne and cocktail bar in Selfridges this autumn.

The new venue joins the original San Carlo in Temple Street and another Fumo, in Waterloo Street, in the West Midlands city.

It will be located on the fourth floor, overlooking the Bullring, and will be the group’s fourth Fumo, joining venues in Manchester, London’s Covent Garden as well as the other Birmingham branch. The new Fumo will take the place of Searcys Balcony Bar and Brasserie, which opened there in 2013.

San Carlo has 17 UK restaurants operating as Signor Sassi, Flying Pizza, Gran Café, Fiorentina and Bottega and Cicchetti as well as Fumo, in Leicester, Bristol, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, London and Hale Barns, Cheshire.

It also has overseas restaurants – Signor Sassi in Bangkok, Thailand and a Cicchetti in Qatar.

The new Fumo, the third San Carlo Group Selfridges site, will serve seasonal Italian small-plate dishes. San Carlo attributes its success to providing original Italian food using the freshest produce, much of which is flown in from Milan and Sicilian markets.

The group also operates San Carlo Bottega and Gran Café within Selfridges Exchange Square, Manchester.

Chef and restaurateur Aldo Zilli is retained in a consultative capacity by founder Carlo Distefano in various roles and has advised on previous restaurant openings.
