The founder of Incipio Group on the importance of teamwork, business rates and what keeps him up at night.

Why hospitality?
I love the fact that it’s all about people, from my teammates working hard to deliver a great experience and product for our guests to the essential partnerships we develop with our suppliers, our landlords and a host of other important collaborators. There are many moving parts to any hospitality business but it all boils down to people and relationships. I love that aspect of the sector.

Tell us something you wish you had been told at the start of your career?
Enjoy what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life.

What’s your favourite restaurant or hospitality group?
I think Gold in Notting Hill is a truly special venue. In terms of groups, I have always been impressed by Inception and Big Mamma Group. You also can’t help but admire what Richard Caring & Nick Jones have achieved.

What motivates you?
The opportunity to create one of the most exciting hospitality groups out there that is also renowned for being a brilliant employer.

What keeps you up at night?
Failing to make the most of any opportunities that present themselves.

Which colleague, mentor or employer has had the biggest influence on your approach to the hospitality business?
My teammates at Incipio for their support, talent and work ethic to drive the group onwards and upwards.

Best business decision?
Putting our team at the heart of the group.

Worst business decision?
Any time I lose sight of the bigger picture.

What piece of advice would you give to those looking to climb the rungs in the business?
Think ahead, take your time, hold your nerve and give it everything you’ve got.

If you could change one thing about the hospitality industry today, what would it be?
Business Rates – the current system is archaic, unfair and a tax on entrepreneurship.

What time do you wake up?
Between 5.30am and 6am. I’ve always been an early riser and with a new baby girl, this is certainly putting it to the test.

Coffee or tea?
Coffee; plenty of it.

How often do you check your email?
Far too often. I’m trying to manage my time better so I can spend less time typing and more time thinking and being face-to-face with my teammates.

How do you let off steam?
Going for a long run.

Do you prefer a night on the tiles or a night on the sofa?
Very tough call. You can’t beat a good night out followed by a night on the sofa with a good boxset!

What are you currently reading?
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.

What boxset are you currently watching?
Ozark.
