Black Bear Burger is to become the latest burger brand to attempt a chicken side hustle.

The burger restaurant will next month launch 20ft Fried Chicken in Market Halls Oxford Street serving a menu that will focus on buttermilk fried chicken burgers, wings and sides.

Targeting the premium end of the market the burgers will use free-range chicken and bespoke sesame demi-brioche buns. Menu items will include The 20 FT Burger, made with buttermilk fried chicken, habanero and honey mayo, B&B pickles and slaw; The Big Chill Burger, with buttermilk fried chicken, fermented chilli hot sauce, pickled celery, ranch dressing, shredded iceberg and pickles; and Spring Roll, featuring fried chicken, cheese and hot sauce in a deep fried wonton served with pickles and dipping sauce.

“Here at Market Halls we pride ourselves on selecting the best of London’s street food,” says founder and chief executive at Market Halls, Andy Lewis-Pratt.

“Black Bear Burger have built an incredible reputation for being the best at what they do. We are so excited to be part of the launch of their latest concept at Market Halls Oxford Street”.

Chicken on the side

Black Bear Burger is not the first burger brand to make a move into the world of chicken. Almost a decade ago MEATliquor purchased the fried chicken restaurant Wishbone in London’s Brixton Market, turning it into a ChickenLiquor before converting it into its burger brand.

More recently, Patty & Bun created roast chicken spin-off SideChick, which eventually became a delivery-only brand before stopping trading. In 2021, Byron owner Famously Proper bought fried chicken Mother Clucker, which is now only available as a delivery-only brand.

Black Bear Burger began life as a food stall in Broadway Market and went on to do residencies at Street Feast and Kerb. In 2016, it launched its first permanent location at Boxpark Shoreditch, followed by its first sit-down restaurant in Brixton Village in 2019. It also operates at sites at Market Halls Cargo in Canary Wharf and Exmouth Market.
