London-based street food market operator KERB is to open its first overseas location next year in Berlin, Germany.

First hinted at by founders Petra Barran and Simon Mitchell in an interview with BigHospitalityback in October, KERB Berlin will be housed within the Sony Centre in the city's Potsdamer Platz district and 'showcase the very best of Berlin’s world class food and drink scene'.

The two storey food hall will be inspired by the building's cinematic heritage, span 2,200 square metres and play host to 12 independent food operators and four bars.

“KERB’s vision has always been to bring joy to unexpected locations, breathing life, colour and deliciousness into the urban fabric,” says Mitchell.

“We are delighted to be working with the Sony Centre to develop a world-beating food hall in the heart of Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz, in a brilliant building, working alongside the very best of the Berlin food scene.”

Like in London, KERB will develop an incubation and accelerator program for local owner-operated businesses in Berlin, offering a spread of live workshops and consultations alongside a digital training platform to develop the food talent coming out of the city.

Social and environmental sustainability will also be high on the agenda with 'progressive and wide-reaching targets' focussing on lower carbon footprint, locality and reuse.

“We are looking forward to becoming a major part of the fabric of the city, supporting the wider neighbourhood development in bringing world class arts, culture and hospitality back to Potsdamer Platz,” adds Mitchell.

KERB launched in 2012 and operates several food markets across the capital, as well as Seven Dials Market food hall in Covent Garden, which, according to the group, plays host to 25,000 customers a week and generates revenue of £15m a year.

James Bell of Gillingham Bell International advised Oxford Properties and Norges Bank Investment Managers on the Sony Center, Berlin. Nick Marks of NCM Projects advised Kerb Food.

KERB is actively searching for Berlin food operators to take up residence in its new food hall and encourages all those interested in being involved to visit: www.kerbfood.com/berlin.
