Just Eat cuts 1,700 delivery jobs as demand falls

Just Eat is to cut 1,700 delivery staff jobs as a result of a drop in demand for restaurant food at home.

The move comes after the delivery platform reported a 9% decline in customer numbers over the past year as diners returned to pubs and restaurants following the lifting of Covid lockdown restrictions.

Just Eat employs around 15,000 workers globally and says the job cuts will see it moving away from employing its own couriers to using freelance ones, as used by competitors Uber Eats and Deliveroo.

“As part of this process we have proposed to transition away from the worker model for couriers, which is a small part of our overall delivery operations - running in certain parts of six UK cities,” says a spokeswoman for Just Eat.

Earlier this month the company announced it would be trialling carbon labelling to help its customers better understand the carbon impact when choosing a meal on its app or web.

It is working with five Brighton-based restaurant partners over a 12-week period where they will display a ‘traffic light’ carbon rating next to main meals.
