Tallow in Royal Tunbridge Wells has topped the Good Food Guide's list of Britain's 100 Best Local Restaurants.

Run by husband-and-wife team Rob and Donna Taylor, formerly of popular gastropub The Compasses Inn in Crundale, the restaurant has won a Bib Gourmand and was ranked at number 91 in the National Restaurant Awards in 2022.

The list follows a six-week process where the Good Food Guide received more than 37,000 nominations with Tallow eventually being named Best Local Restaurant by the guidebook.

"Tallow stood out, head and shoulders above what is a very strong list this year. For a chef of this quality to be so happily focused on running a neighbourhood restaurant is extraordinary," says the Good Food Guide's Editor, Elizabeth Carter.

"There's a level of commitment here that would sit happily in many top restaurants. Everything is beautifully thought through, from food you really want to eat – delicious, simple, seasonal – to the remarkably at-ease service and the care of customers."

The guide has also named a number of regional winners that include Homestead Kitchen in the north-east, the Kinneuchar Inn in Scotland, Rocket & Rye in Wales, Tropea in central and the east of England, Sparrows in the north-west, Seasonality in the south-east, and Wild Artichokes in the south-west.

Les 2 Garçons in Crouch End was named London’s Best Local Restaurant by the guide.
