Leicester restaurant The Case closes after 33 years

Owner David Hartshorn announced the news ‘with a heavy heart’ on the venue's website​​, saying The Case had survived recessions and a pandemic, but now had ‘no more to give’.

He said: “Since 1990, we’ve had a blast. But we’ve had some tough times too.

“Along the way, we’ve created and served fine seasonal dishes to some truly wonderful customers. We’ve worked with incredibly talented people in the kitchen and front of house. Our suppliers have been a joy.

“Together, we’ve laughed, quaffed, danced, cried and celebrated. We’ve remained gloriously independent throughout.

“Throughout recessions, a pandemic and mind-numbingly short-sighted decisions from Leicester City Council, we stayed true to our values.

“We’ve worked unbelievably hard. Because it’s been our life blood. Our passion. Our love. We set the benchmark. Alas, we have no more to give.”

Hartshorn’s announcement led to an outpouring of grief on social media from fans of the restaurant.

Among them was Alex Reilley, chairman and co-founder on national restaurant chain Loungers, who used to work at The Case.

“Such unbelievably sad news,” he wrote on Instagram.

“I have, what feels like, a lifetime of happy memories working there, dining there, being very drunk there, dancing there.

“Working at The Case gave me the hospitality bug and I will always be so indebted to you David for the passion I have for the career I have been lucky enough to enjoy. You created a restaurant that was absurdly ahead of its time and gave Leicester an enormous slice of something inspirational and aspirational.”
