US-born fried chicken brand Popeyes will make its debut north of the border later this year with a drive-thru site just outside Glasgow.

In Barrhead’s new retail park, the site will be the Popeyes UK’s 12th opening in 2023, and the chain’s 29th opening since landing in the UK in November 2021.

Kerbside parking bays will be available for those who order online and collect, and the new restaurant will seat 56 people for dine in, with 16 seats outside.

It is one of a handful of UK drive-thru sites for the brand, with its first drive-thru site on these shores having launched earlier this year.

The site will be serving Popeyes recently-launched breakfast menu, which include the Big Breakfast Roll (a sausage patty, egg, streaky bacon, and American cheese in a soft bun); a variety of sausage, bacon, egg and cheese muffins; Cajun hash browns; Louisiana buttermilk biscuits served with cinnamon sugar or Nutella.

“We are thrilled to announce that Popeyes will be opening in Scotland for the first time later this year. Opening restaurants in Scotland has been key for us since we first landed in the UK, and we’re looking forward to opening,” says Popeyes UK CEO Tom Crowley.

“Our recent openings have been some of the biggest to date, not just in the UK but for Popeyes globally, and we are confident that our launch in Scotland will prove just as popular.”

The news follows Popeyes UK securing a £50m partnership with private equity firm TDR Capital to drive its next phase of growth.

Crowley says the partnership will allow the group to build on its current momentum.

Last month, Popeyes UK announced the launch of a wedding catering service offering food packages for up to 150 guests that include chicken sandwiches, hot wings and Southern biscuits.
