Bristol-based Sandwich Sandwich has been named the Uber Eats UK and Ireland’s Restaurant of the Year.

The family-run sandwich business, which has five sites across the city, took home a prize of £100,000 to invest in their business.

Following several rounds of public voting, Sandwich Sandwich took part in a judging day with fellow national finalists from across the UK and Ireland. Judges included food writer Prue Leith and Monica Galetti.

Sandwich Sandwich started as Cotham Sandwich Co back in 2010 before it changed its name in 2012 as part of its aims to expand across Bristol. It has since opened sites in Baldwin Street, Temple Way, Queens Road, and Park Row.

In 2019 it was voted The Best independent sandwich retailer in the UK.

“It is difficult to put into words how much being announced as the winner of the Uber Eats Restaurant of the Year Awards means to us,” says Josh Kleiner, owner at Sandwich Sandwich.

“The process has been so exciting from start to finish and it has been incredible to take part alongside the other finalists. Big shout out to our restaurant team back home in Bristol, our family and of course Uber Eats for the support in getting us to this moment. This investment will make our ambitions to grow as a family business a reality.”

Prue Leith says: “I was hugely impressed by all of the finalists, and by the food they served on the judging day. That from Sandwich Sandwich was particularly imaginative, inventive and delicious.

“I’m delighted to hear of their ambition to open additional restaurants. Their menu is fresh, full of flavour, healthy and extremely varied. There’s something for everyone on there.”

The awards also recognised restaurants that Uber says are changing the face of the restaurant industry.

Natalie Francis from Doreen’s Kitchen in the West Midlands was named Female Chef/Restaurateur of the Year; Taste from India, also in the West Midlands, was named Community Impact Award Restaurant of the Year; Health-Focused Restaurant of the Year went to EAT LEBO in Ruislip; and Sustainable Restaurant of the Year was awarded to ANSH in Cardiff.
