Lee Westcott says he plans to relaunch Elodie in a new location

Writing on Instagram, the high-profile chef said that the fine dining restaurant he launched earlier this year will ‘live on in a new site in the near future’.

Elodie and Westcott’s more casual Vervain were forced to shut last week​​ as the Croydon hotel was closed by administrators.

Birch’s Hertfordshire site had closed a week or so earlier,​​ leading to the shuttering of two restaurants overseen by Robin Gill. 

Birch Selsdon was confirmed to have fallen into administration alongside Birch Chestnut, but initially remained open.

The hotel only launched in the spring of this year, with Westcott overseeing its culinary direction. The restaurant was described as being ‘driven by nature’ and will serve a seasonal five course tasting menu celebrating the best produce the British Isles as well as using foraged for ingredients and those taken from Selsdon’s grounds.

Its closure comes little more than a month after The Observer’s Jay Rayner reviewed Vervain, which he described as serving ‘a seriously good menu in a grand hotel that needs a bit of work’.

Birch has previously been described as a cross between a hotel and a members club and was the brainchild of Chris Penn, former managing director at The Ace Hotel in London, and entrepreneur Chris King.

The pair left the business earlier this year and a new management team led by managing director Ayo Akinsete was put in place.
